Senior Professor Athula Kaluarachchi is the Chair Professor of Obstetrics and gynaecology at the Faculty of Medicine, University of Colombo, Sri Lanka.
He entered Ananda College, Colombo, in 1966 and entered the Faculty of Medicine, University of Colombo in 1979.
He passed out from the Faculty of Medicine, University of Colombo, in 1985, passing the final MBBS examination with honours. He obtained the MS (Obs & Gyn) degree from the Postgraduate Institute of Medicine, University of Colombo, in 1990. He trained overseas at the Queens Medical Centre, Nottingham, United Kingdom and the Royal Hospital, Chesterfield, United Kingdom. He was admitted as a Member of the Royal College of Obstetricians & Gynaecologists, United Kingdom, by examination in 1993 and was awarded the Fellowship in 2005. He obtained the membership of the Royal College of Physicians, Ireland, by examination in 1994. He was awarded the Fellowship of the Sri Lanka College of Obstetricians & Gynaecologists in 2005.
Prof Kaluarachchi is the founder secretary and a past president of the Old Anandians Buddhist Association. Currently, he serves as an advisor of the Old Anandians Buddhist Association. He is also the founder secretary and a past president of the Old Anandians Medical Guild. At present, he serves as an advisor of the Medical Guild. He has been an executive committee member, Vice President and Deputy President of the Ananda College Old Boys Association.
He was the founder secretary and a past president of the Colombo Medical School Alumni Association.
Prof Athula Kaluarachchi has held the positions of Secretary, Editor, Chairman of the Academic Activities Committee and Chairman of the Ethics Committee of the Sri Lanka College of Obstetricians and Gynaecologists. He was elected as the President of the Sri Lanka College of Obstetricians & Gynaecologists in 2019.
He also served as the President of the Perinatal Society of Sri Lanka in 2015. He was appointed as the Honorary Medical Director of the Family Planning Association of Sri Lanka from 2010 – 2015.
He is a recipient of the National Award for Excellence in Multidisciplinary Team Effort in Research and Development in the area of “Assisted Reproduction Technologies” awarded by the National Science Foundation, Sri Lanka and the Young Gynaecologists Award (awarded by the Asia & Oceania Federation of Obstetrics & Gynaecology).
He has over 100 publications in peer-reviewed local and international journals, over 80 presentations at scientific meetings and has delivered over 50 invited guest lectures.
Prof Athula Kaluarachchi delivered the D.A. Ranasinghe Oration in 2009 and Dr Siva Chinnathamby’s oration in 2018.
Prof Athula Kaluarachchi continues to serve as a specialist in Obstetrics and Gynaecology with a special interest in Subfertility and Medical disorders in pregnancy.
